What Is TUDCA?

TUDCA stands for tauroursodeoxycholic acid — a bile acid your liver naturally produces in small amounts by attaching taurine to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Bile acids are best known for helping you digest and absorb dietary fat, but TUDCA in particular has drawn research interest for a second job: acting as a "chemical chaperone" that helps stabilize proteins and reduce stress inside your cells, especially in the liver.

Its precursor, UDCA, is FDA-approved for treating cholestatic liver disease, and TUDCA itself is the primary bile acid found in bear bile, where it occurs as a combination of taurine and UDCA. In supplement form, it's typically synthesized rather than derived from that traditional source.

TUDCA's most consistent research base is around liver function:

  • Fatty liver support. In animal models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), TUDCA treatment has been shown to reduce obesity and hepatic lipid buildup, improve intestinal barrier function and microbial balance, and increase populations of beneficial gut bacteria. Mechanistically, it appears to work by influencing receptors that regulate bile acid production in the liver, ultimately reducing fatty acid absorption and lipid accumulation.
  • Cholestatic conditions. Because of its close relationship to UDCA, TUDCA has a long history of use in Europe for gallstones and cholestatic liver disease, and researchers note it appears more effective than UDCA at raising bile concentrations after oral administration.
  • Metabolic effects. Animal research has linked TUDCA to improved insulin clearance in obesity models — in one study, 15 days of treatment restored plasma insulin to more normal levels in high-fat-diet mice, an effect tied to increased insulin clearance and liver enzyme expression.
  • Neuroprotection. Because TUDCA can cross the blood-brain barrier, it's been explored in clinical trials for neurodegenerative conditions like ALS and multiple sclerosis, generally with a favorable safety profile, though diarrhea has been reported as the most common side effect at higher doses.
  • Emerging areas. More recent research is looking at TUDCA in combination with immunotherapy for liver cancer, and in pancreatitis models, where bile acid supplementation reduced pancreatic and intestinal injury in association with gut microbiota changes.

It's worth being honest about the caveats: a good portion of this evidence comes from animal or cell-based studies rather than large human trials. Independent research reviewers point out that while TUDCA is well-studied for liver conditions and considered to have a strong safety record, robust clinical evidence in otherwise healthy humans for benefits like brain or eye health is still limited.

Who Tends to Look Into TUDCA

People typically explore TUDCA for a few reasons:

  • Supporting liver health, especially alongside a higher-fat or higher-protein diet, alcohol consumption, or use of medications processed by the liver
  • General digestive support, since bile acids play a direct role in fat digestion
  • As part of a broader metabolic health or longevity-focused supplement stack
  • Athletes and bodybuilders, who sometimes use it around periods of higher supplement or medication load on the liver

A Few Practical Notes

TUDCA is generally well tolerated, with gastrointestinal upset (particularly loose stools) being the most commonly reported side effect at higher intakes. Because it directly affects bile acid metabolism and liver enzyme activity, it's not a supplement to combine casually with liver medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs, or other bile acid therapies without talking to a healthcare provider first — and anyone with an existing liver or gallbladder condition should check in with their doctor before starting.
